Welcome! :)
My name is Alicia and I own, edit...and have a blast with this website.
Plus-Size-Savvy.com was created to help plus size women shop for their figures, so they can look good, feel good and have fun in the process.
When I was a little kid I used to root around in my moms closet and walk around in her high heeled shoes. One day I found this big red book. It was a book of Vogue patterns from back in the 5O's.
This book had some of the sharpest, most beautiful clothes I'd ever seen. There were patterns for everything from nightgowns to ballgowns.
Even that young, I knew I was looking at something special. From that point on I was hooked on fashion.
I have lots of old photos of my mom in some of the most chic clothes I've ever seen. Back in the days when every woman wore a hat, sometimes gloves, classic pumps and carried a clutch bag.
She wore sharp suits, pretty party dresses, and gowns that were flowy and fabulous.
|
She would have these clothes made to fit her size 16-18 hourglass figure.
All of these clothes were handmade for her by aunts and other ladies that made clothes to make a living, back in the days when having your whole wardrobe made by a seamstress was more common, and actually more affordable than department store shopping. |
When I was 10 my mom enrolled me in a Singer sewing class, and I started making clothes and doing other sewing projects on the Singer machine that sat in our living room throughout my entire upbringing.
I took classes again in high school because I loved it, and for the easy A. :)
In college I took a part time job selling plus size clothes for Lane Bryant. Being a size 14-16 at the time I couldn't have asked for a better job.
I had first pick of everything that came into the store. But even then, (which was not THAT long ago) it was difficult to find stylish plus size clothes.
There were still mostly shapeless tops made of big ugly prints, with bows and ties where no bow or tie should ever be on a plus size woman. The pants were mostly polyester and there was no such thing as a "pretty" plus size bra. Nevermind "sexy".
But fashion for plus size women quickly evolved, and during that evolution I helped hundreds of women, from all walks of life, find clothes that looked good on them, and more importantly, made them feel good.
Now full figured women have more style options than ever before. Even with all the talk about negative body image and obesity being an epidemic, there are healthy, happy plus size women who have a demand for clothes that are polished, professional, trendy and sexy too.
After years with Lane Bryant I left retail, and eventually started my own line of handmade jewelry with a collection designed and sized specifically for plus size women.
But my love of fashion and styling has only grown as more designers have embraced the full figured woman, and trendy plus size collections have moved into the mainstream retailers.
If you're a plus size woman who's never sure about what looks good on your curves, or you just hate to shop.
Or...
...If you're a plus size fashionista who loves to check out the latest trends, timeless styles or revisit vintage styles...
