A good sports bra is important for any active plus size woman. In addition to giving you comfort and mobility, a good sports bra helps keep the ligaments that give your breasts shape and support intact.

Sports bras come in three general styles.

Shimmel Bras:

These are also known as Shelf Bras. Simply a piece of stretchable fabric with a wide elastic band to cover your breasts underneath a very simple, thin strapped bra or sports top.

I don't really consider these a sports bra as they give very little support, but in some stores you can find these bras in with the other, more substantial sports bras

Compression Bras:

These bras generally do not have individual cups, but they all offer support that gently, or not so gently compresses your breast to your chest to avoid painful bouncing when you're active.

Encapsulation Bras:

Encapsulation sports bras have distinct cups to give separation and use compression and sometimes underwires to hold breasts in place during high impact activities.

The most expensive versions of Compression and Encapsulation sports bras are usually purchased by women who have had breast surgery in order to assist in their healing.

But if you're simply an active woman a good sports bra is definitely worth the investment.

Sports Bra Shopping Tips

• Be prepared to do some trying on. A good sports bra is a decent investment so you want to make sure you get the right fit.


• Start by knowing your correct bra size. You may have to adjust up or down according to the style of the bra.


• Once you try the bra on make sure your breasts are squeezed to the point of being uncomfortable. There shouldn't be any pinching, bulging or overflow.


• Go through the motions of your activity and raise your arms up over your head. Your breasts should stay comfortably inside the bra no matter which way you twist and turn. They should also not feel like they want to slip down past the band.

Any sensation that a wardrobe malfunction is eminent means you need to go either up or down a size.
• Wider shoulder straps will give you better, more even support than thin straps.


• A racer back will usually give the best support but may feel a bit strange at first if you aren't used to wearing this style and if you don't buy the correct size.

The best racer back bras have some cup separation and offer all over compression for high impact activities.
